Summary: Death of James Barnes, 72 years
of age, who died at the hospital in Big Pine. Mr. Barnes had been an
Inyo County resident 30 years. Was a former owner of the Lone Pine
Hotel, and also a proprietor at the hotel at Keeler. He was also a
Democratic nominee for Sheriff of Inyo County.

"BOARD OF SUPERVISORS: VIEWERS NAMED IN THE
KEELER ROAD CONTEST"
Summary: Inyo County Board of
Supervisors minutes for Thursday, April 8. H.D. Gill of Independence
appeared under oath and made a complaint as to the violation of
liquor ordinances by saloon keepers. He stated that in Darwin
February 1909, he saw Henry Heitman, who is proprietor of a saloon,
sell liquor to different persons who were intoxicated. At the saloon
of George Mates at Keeler, he saw liquor sold to intoxicated men.
Saloons of A.B. Elder, Bob Carrasco and Harry Reynolds at Lone Pine
also sold liquor to intoxicated men; as well as the saloons of H.
Leavy, Naylor & Maxwell, and C.H. Johnson in Independence.

Summary:
A case between the Four Metals Company (of Keeler, CA) vs Troeger and
Clinton for possession of Cerro Gordo slag. Submitted before Judge
Dehy of Inyo County. Each side has fifteen days in which to file
briefs. And the court may then take 90-days in which to render a
decision.

“BOX CAR ROBBERY”
Summary:
Reports of box car robberies come from Keeler, where a car was
entered last week and several cases of merchandise stolen. A quantity
of whiskey as well as articles of food. A short time later, cans and
bottles of “abstracted brands” began to appear around a
cabin occupied by a gang of tramps. Officer Oscar Dearborne made a
roundup and arrested seven suspects.

$240 ORE: NEWSBOY MINE HAS SHOWING WORTHY CERRO GORDO’S
LIVELIEST DAYS.”
Summary: An employee on the
tramway to Cerro Gordo lost his balance and to save himself he caught
the traveling cable. His finger was carried between the cable and the
wheel and instantly cut off.

“DEATH AT
LAWS”
Summary: A young man named John
Hjalmarsolini was found dead in a hammock at George Huckaby’s
place at Laws, California. He had been working at Keeler, California,
but recently came to Laws. Mr. Hjalmarsolini secured a room at
Huckaby’s Hotel. Inquest held by Justice Shannon showed that he
had probably risen very early in the morning, gone to a ditch nearby
for a drink of water, and laid down in the hammock instead of
returning to his room. Consumption was the cause of death. He held
certificates as a stationary engineer for small engines, and papers
on him showed he had ownership of land in Saskatchewan, Canada.
