1906

Beatty Bullfrog Miner, July 21, 1906
“PROSPECTORS PERISH”
“Benj. Epstein arrived from Emigrant Springs Tuesday, and reports that prospectors named Clark and Johnson from Tonopah, got lost in the Panamint hills and perished last week. They left a team tied at Emigrant Springs and did not return from a trip. A searching party failed to find them. They disappeared July 6, and have probably perished from thirst.”

Beatty-Bullfrog Miner, July 28, 1906
“LOCAL.”
“Benj. Eppstein returned from Emigrant Springs Thursday. He says the two prospectors, Clark and Johnson, have not been found.”

Inyo Independence, August 3, 1906
"Two prospectors have perished on the desert in the vicinity of the Panamint valley. Their names are Clarke and Johnson, but their place of residence is unknown. The two men were last seen at Emigrant Springs where they left their camp and team to make a prospecting trip out into the burning hills of the Panamint range. They were last seen July 6 and have undoubtedly become lost and perished from heat and thirst."

Beatty Bullfrog Miner, August 4, 1906
“NO MURDER.”
“Little or no credence is given here to the belief that Clark and Johnson, the unfortunate prospectors who are supposed to have perished in Death Valley, died of foul play. There are cases where discoverers of rich ledges have been followed when returning to their mines and murdered, but those days are over. If the unlucky men are dead, and there is but little doubt that they are, they perished as dozens before them – from the demon of thirst. Death valley is not a suitable place for the highwayman and robber.”
